A man previously on death row for a drug-related case has had his conviction overturned by Singapore’s Court of Appeal for insufficient evidence. Abdoll Mutaleb Raffik received a 10-year jail sentence instead for attempted possession of heroin. The court found Mutaleb had a role in illegal drug activities but had difficulty proving alleged conspiracy. His co-accused received life imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane. [link]
Serene Seng, a former assistant and manager of corporate affairs at Hin Leong Trading testified for the prosecution in the trial of the company’s former owner. The founder is facing charges of cheating and forgery. The defence counsel accused Seng of lying during her testimony, and Seng acknowledged inconsistencies in her statements to the Commercial Affairs Department but denied the accusations. Singapore introduced new cooling measures as property prices rise with foreigners’ ABSD rate now at 60%, while locals purchasing their 2nd home pay 20%, and entities or trusts pay 65%. This is the third round of measures since Dec 2021, affecting 10% of transactions. Citizens and PRs pay 0% and 5% respectively on their first home. [link]
